Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow:
Of all the trees of Southern Asia, the banyan tree is unique, not only for the manner of its growth but for the area of shade it provides from the burning sun. Its close relationship with man has evolved over the years to make the banyans a most popular meeting place, a focal point of worship and a source of practical materials for commerce.
Known as the 'strangler fig', because of its unusual manner of growth, the banyan is an epiphyte or air plant that has its birth in the branches of a host tree and lives on airborne moisture and nutrients. Banyan seeds are deposited by birds, bats or monkeys in the rich soil collected in the crevices of the host tree branches.
As the banyan grows, it sends aerial roots down the trunk of the supported tree. In time, the roots that reach the ground choke the host tree by preventing its trunk from enlarging. The two best known species of banyans are : the Indian, one of the world's largest tropical trees; and the Chinese, a smaller species with fewer aerial roots.

2. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow :
Classroom life is shaped and constrained by the norms, values and traditions of the school. The classroom is a social system which has its own structural arrangements, cultural idioms, and functional purposes. This sets apart the classroom culture of a school and the children constantly pick up what comes across including the unspoken.
Also the interaction of children with teachers in the course of a day depends on : the type of teacher ie. volunteer, group coordinator, trainee, the nature of work ie. project v/s training and the setting ie. classroom, grounds, dining hall, meditation hall etc. Intergroup variation in children's interaction with teachers is evident. While the younger children ie. those up to 6 - 7 years of age do not react differently, children of older groups 7 to 10 years show clear demarcating lines among teachers, ie. the group coordinators or full time teachers being considered higher in status than volunteers and trainee teachers, therefore children give more weightage to their instructions ie. "listen to them". This in turn affects the student's behaviour towards the teacher and also the quality of interaction.

4. Answer the following questions based on the passage:

(iv) What is the point of difference between the children of both groups towards their teacher?
The children of one group show respect and obedience towards their teacher, while the children of the other group are indifferent or disrespectful. This difference arises from the home environment and upbringing.

(v) What affects the quality of interaction between the students and the teacher?
The quality of interaction is affected by the attitude of students, their interest in learning, and the teacher's approach. A positive and supportive environment enhances interaction.

(vi) What are the various roles of a teacher mentioned in the passage?
The various roles of a teacher include being a guide, mentor, facilitator, and a source of knowledge. The teacher also acts as a motivator and a role model for students.

The word is "utter" (or similar, based on context).

When he finished he went to the window to buy a stamp which he licked and affixed to the envelope with a blow of his fist. The moment the letter fell into the mailbox the postmaster went to open it. It said, "God : Of money that I asked for, only seventy pesos reached me. Send me the rest, since I need it very much. But don't send it to me through the mail because the post office employees are a bunch of crooks. Lencho".

She was confused and surprised that he was asking for help when, according to her instruments, he was flying alone in clear skies.
(ii) What vision does Nelson Mandela have for the future of South Africa ? (Nelson Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom)
Nelson Mandela's vision for the future of South Africa was of a society where all people, regardless of their race or colour, would live together in peace, equality, and freedom. He dreamed of a nation where every person would have equal opportunities and where the divisions of apartheid would be replaced by unity and brotherhood.
5. Answer the following question in about 30-40 words :
(i) How did the second issue of dispute between Natalya and Lomov develop ? (The Proposal)
The second dispute developed when Lomov mentioned that his dog, Guess, was a good dog. Natalya immediately disagreed and claimed that her dog, Squeezer, was far better. They began arguing about which dog was superior, with each praising their own dog's qualities and pointing out faults in the other's dog.

(ii) How can we say that Natalya was in love with Lomov ? (The Proposal)
We can say Natalya was in love with Lomov because when she learned that Lomov had come to propose to her, she became very anxious and immediately called him back. She also readily agreed to marry him despite their earlier arguments, showing that she had feelings for him and wanted to be his wife.
6. Explain any one of the following stanzas with reference to the context :
Stanza 1:
"I heard an old religious man
But yesternight declare
That he had found a text to prove
That only God, my dear,
Could love you for yourself alone
And not your yellow hair."
Explanation (with reference to the context): This stanza is from the poem “For Anne Gregory” by W.B. Yeats. The poet says that he heard an old religious man declare that he had found a religious text which proves that only God can love a person for their inner self, not for their outward beauty like yellow hair. The poet wants to convey that human love is often based on physical appearance, while divine love is unconditional and sees the soul.

Stanza 2:
"Some say the world will end in fire
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favour fire."
Explanation (with reference to the context): This stanza is from the poem “Fire and Ice” by Robert Frost. The poet presents two popular beliefs about the end of the world: one by fire and the other by ice. The poet personally believes that the world will end in fire because he has experienced the destructive power of desire (fire). Here, fire symbolizes human desire and ice symbolizes hatred. The poet thinks desire is more powerful and destructive.

(i) Describe in detail Custard, the dragon. (The Tale of Custard the Dragon)
Custard was a little dragon who lived with Belinda and her other pets. He had big sharp teeth, spikes on his back, and a mouth like a fireplace. He was often called a coward because he always cried for a safe cage. However, when a pirate attacked, Custard bravely fought and ate him, proving he was actually the bravest of all.
(ii) What similarities does Sandburg draw between the fog and the cat? (Fog)
Carl Sandburg compares the fog to a cat. Both the fog and a cat come silently without making any noise. The fog sits on its haunches like a cat, looking over the harbour and the city. Then, just like a cat moves away quietly, the fog also moves on without warning.
(iii) How, according to Walt Whitman, are animals different from human beings? (Animals)
According to Walt Whitman, animals are different from humans because they are self-contained, calm, and content. They do not complain about their condition, do not weep for their sins, and do not have any obsession with material possessions. They live a simple, honest life without any artificial needs or desires, unlike humans who are always restless and dissatisfied.

(i) Give an example to prove that Ausable had great presence of mind. (The Midnight Visitor)
Ausable, a secret agent, showed great presence of mind when a killer entered his room. He cleverly invented a story about a balcony outside his window, claiming it was a convenient escape route for criminals. When the killer rushed to the window, Ausable quickly shut it, trapping the man. This quick thinking saved his life and proved his sharp intelligence under pressure.

(ii) How did the Loisels repay for the lost necklace? (The Necklace)
After losing the borrowed necklace, the Loisels bought an identical one for 36,000 francs. They used their entire inheritance of 18,000 francs and borrowed the rest. For ten years, they worked tirelessly—Mathilde did heavy housework, and her husband worked extra jobs. They lived in poverty, sacrificing everything to repay the debt, only to later learn the original necklace was fake.
