1. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow :
Education in our country today has become entirely meaningless. During all these years of our independence, we have been planning only. These plans are borrowed from the west. We have not been able to bring a proper reform in the sphere of education. A lifeless mechanical system of teaching in overcrowded schools and colleges is imposed by far from competent teachers on students whose only interest is to get through examinations. We have completely forgotten the truth that the aim of education is to build up character in the widest sense and then to impart knowledge.

Ashoka was a great emperor. He thought that the duty of a great king was to protect the people and safeguard their rights. He gave protection to the public and made arrangement for justice. He instructed his officials to behave properly with the public. He engraved the message of justice and non-violence on pillars and installed them at different places. Some of the pillars still tell us about his greatness. He opened hospitals for the infirm and the old where good treatment was given to the patients. He also opened hospitals for animals. He was really great as he advocated pity and mercy for all living creatures.

In her grief, she carried the dead child to all her neighbours, asking them for medicine, and the people said, “She has lost her senses. The boy is dead.”

He was not yet aware of the racial discrimination and restrictions that would later define his life. This was a time of innocence and natural freedom, before the harsh realities of apartheid took away his liberties.
(ii) What are the compulsive habits of school going children? (Mijbil the Otter)
School going children often develop compulsive habits like collecting small objects, arranging things in a particular order, or repeating certain actions. They may also have habits like biting nails, tapping pencils, or fidgeting. These habits are usually unconscious and provide comfort or a sense of control. In the story, Mijbil the otter also showed similar compulsive behaviors, like playing with a rubber ball in a repetitive manner.

(i) Write the theme of the play “The Proposal”. (The Proposal)
The theme of the play “The Proposal” is the absurdity of human pride and quarrels over trivial matters. It shows how two families, despite wanting a marriage alliance, argue over petty issues like land and dogs, highlighting the foolishness of ego and the importance of compromise.
(ii) Why does Natalya ask her father to call Lomov back ? (The Proposal)
Natalya asks her father to call Lomov back because she realizes that Lomov had come to propose to her. After learning this from her father, she feels regret for arguing with him and wants to accept his proposal, fearing she might lose a good match.
16. Explain any one of the following stanzas with reference to the context : 1×4=4
(i) He should be snarling around houses
At the jungle’s edge,
Baring his white fangs, his claws,
Terrorizing the village !
Context: This stanza is from the poem “A Tiger in the Zoo” by Leslie Norris. The poet contrasts the tiger’s natural habitat in the jungle with its confined life in a zoo.
Explanation: The poet imagines how the tiger should be in its natural environment—prowling near houses at the edge of the jungle, showing its sharp teeth and claws, and frightening the villagers. (iii) What is the central idea of the poem, “Amanda!”? (Amanda!)
The central idea of the poem "Amanda!" is the conflict between a child's desire for freedom and the constant nagging and restrictions imposed by parents. It highlights the importance of giving children space to grow and express themselves.

(i) Give a character-sketch of Horace Danby? (A Question of Trust)
Horace Danby was a respectable, intelligent, and meticulous thief who robbed only one house each year to fund his hobby of collecting rare books. He was a 50-year-old bachelor who lived alone and planned his crimes carefully. However, he was also naive and trusting, which led to his downfall when he was tricked by a clever young woman posing as the lady of the house. Despite his criminal nature, he had a soft heart and was not violent.
(ii) How did Mr. Loisel and Matilda repay their debt? (The Necklace)
After losing the borrowed necklace, Mr. Loisel and Matilda bought a replacement costing 36,000 francs. To repay this debt, they moved to a smaller apartment, dismissed their maid, and lived a life of extreme hardship. Mr. Loisel worked extra jobs at night, while Matilda did all the household chores herself. They worked tirelessly for ten years, sacrificing all comforts, until the entire debt was cleared.

Mme. Forestier did not recognize Matilda because ten years of hard work and poverty had changed Matilda's appearance drastically. She looked old, tired, and shabby, unlike her former beautiful and youthful self.
