Why were shudras and untouchables classified at the very bottom of social order?

Why did Siddhartha decide to adopt the path of mendicancy? Write the causes.
Throw light on the fortification of Vijayanagar.
Answer: The fortification of Vijayanagar was very strong. The city was surrounded by seven concentric walls built between hills and valleys. These walls were made of large stones and had many gates. Natural hills and water bodies were also used in the fortification. Deep moats filled with water were dug around the city. This fortification was very effective in protecting the city from enemy attacks.
"In the 16th - 17th A.D. a large section of the village population comprised groups much like the Dalits of modern times that had the least resources and were constrained by their position in the caste hierarchy." How far do you agree to this statement ?
Answer: I agree with this statement to a large extent. In the 16th-17th centuries, there was a large section in villages considered 'untouchable' or of low caste. These people had no land or resources and worked as laborers for upper castes. They faced social discrimination like not being allowed to enter temples, draw water from public wells, and were forced to live in separate settlements. This situation was quite similar to modern Dalits. However, this condition was not uniform in all villages, and in some areas, lower castes had some rights.
"Many consider Jalaluddin Akbar the greatest of all the Mughal emperors." How far do you agree to this statement ?
Answer: I agree with this statement to a large extent. There are many reasons to consider Akbar the greatest Mughal emperor. He expanded the empire greatly and established a strong administrative system. His policy of religious tolerance (Sulh-e-Kul) and experiments like Din-i-Ilahi make him unique. He incorporated Rajputs into the empire and implemented land revenue reforms. Although Shah Jahan's architecture and Aurangzeb's expansion can also be considered great, Akbar's vision and reforms laid a strong foundation for the Mughal Empire, which is why he is considered the greatest.
Why did Britishers consider temperate and cool climate of the Indian hills as an advantage ? Explain.
Answer: The Britishers considered the cool climate of Indian hills an advantage for several reasons. First, this climate was good for their health and provided relief from the heat and diseases (like malaria) of India. Second, they could grow crops like tea, coffee, and cinchona in the hills, which gave good profits. Third, it was easy to set up military cantonments in hilly areas, from where they could control the north-western frontier. Fourth, these places were suitable for administrative work in summer, so they made places like Shimla the summer capital.
"In the context of Acts of 1909 and 1919 the separate electorate crucially shaped the nature of communal politics." Explain the statement.
Answer: This statement is correct that the Morley-Minto Reforms of 1909 and the Government of India Act of 1919 introduced the system of separate electorates, which deeply affected communal politics. Separate electorates meant that separate constituencies were created for Muslims (and later other minorities), where only they could vote and elect their own representatives. This promoted communalism because it made religion the basis of politics. It increased the distance between Hindus and Muslims, and they formed separate political parties for their own interests. This ultimately contributed to the partition of India.
"A communist member of the Constituent Assembly, Somnath Lahiri saw the dark hand of British imperialism hanging over the deliberations of the Constituent Assembly." Explain.
Answer: Somnath Lahiri, a communist member of the Constituent Assembly, believed that the deliberations of the Constituent Assembly were heavily influenced by British imperialism. According to him, the Constituent Assembly was not fully independent because it was working under the framework created by the British government (the Cabinet Mission Plan of 1946). He argued that the British government had limited the powers of the Constituent Assembly and did not want complete sovereignty for India. Lahiri also said that there were members in the Constituent Assembly who protected British interests and promoted imperialist ideology. Therefore, he called it the 'dark hand of British imperialism'.

Throw light on the remains of domestic architecture, the citadel and the Great Bath of Mohenjodaro civilization. (6)
OR
Speaking about the subsistence strategies of Harappan culture, explain their agricultural technologies. (6)

"Bernier saw crown ownership of land as being harmful for both the state and its people." Give arguments in the favour of this statement. (6)
OR
What was the description of the condition of dasas and dasis in his travelogue of Ibn Batuta ? (6)

Write an essay on the Salt Satyagraha of Gandhiji.
OR
Many scholars have written about the months after independence as being Gandhiji's ‘finest hour’. Throw light on his personality on the basis of truth of the above statement.
Solution (Essay on Salt Satyagraha):
The Salt Satyagraha, also known as the Dandi March, was a pivotal event in the Indian independence movement led by Mahatma Gandhi in 1930. It was a nonviolent protest against the British monopoly on salt production and the heavy salt tax imposed on Indians. Gandhi chose salt as a symbol because it was a basic necessity used by all, rich and poor alike.
On March 12, 1930, Gandhi began a 24-day, 240-mile march from Sabarmati Ashram to the coastal village of Dandi in Gujarat. Accompanied by 78 followers, he walked for 24 days, covering about 10 miles per day. The march gained massive public attention and support, with thousands joining along the way. On April 6, 1930, Gandhi reached Dandi and broke the salt law by picking up a handful of natural salt from the seashore. This act symbolized defiance against unjust British laws.
The Salt Satyagraha sparked widespread civil disobedience across India. People began making salt illegally, boycotting British goods, and participating in peaceful protests. The British responded with mass arrests, including Gandhi himself, but the movement had already captured the world's attention and exposed the moral bankruptcy of colonial rule. It marked a turning point in India's struggle for freedom, demonstrating the power of nonviolent resistance and uniting Indians across regions and classes.
Solution (Alternative - Gandhiji's Finest Hour):
The statement that the months after independence were Gandhiji's 'finest hour' holds deep truth. After India gained independence on August 15, 1947, the nation was torn apart by the horrors of Partition, with widespread communal violence, mass migrations, and immense suffering. During this time, Gandhi emerged not as a political leader but as a moral beacon of peace and humanity.
He walked through the riot-torn areas of Bengal and Bihar, visiting refugee camps, comforting the afflicted, and fasting to bring an end to the bloodshed. His relentless efforts to restore communal harmony, his willingness to risk his own life for peace, and his unwavering commitment to nonviolence even in the face of extreme hatred showcased the highest ideals of his personality. He did not seek power or position but dedicated himself entirely to healing the wounds of a divided nation.
