“People are always telling us to be kind to animals, but when we are, they scream. 'Ooh, don't bring that dirty creature here!' said Ravi. "Do you know how hard it is just to get a little milk from the kitchen? Paati saw me with a glass in my hand just now. I told her I'm very hungry, I want to drink it, but the way she looked at me! I had to drink most of it to throw her off the scent. Then she wanted the tumbler back. 'Paati, Paati, I'll wash it myself, why should I put you to trouble', I told her."

  1. What do people tell us?
    People tell us to be kind to animals.
  2. What was difficult for Ravi?
    It was difficult for Ravi to get a little milk from the kitchen without being noticed.
  3. What did Ravi tell to Paati when she saw him taking milk?
    Ravi told Paati that he was very hungry and wanted to drink the milk.

2. Read the following passages and answer the questions that follow:-

The good old man humbly asked for the ashes. Though the covetous couple turned up their noses at him and scolded him as if he were a thief, they let him fill his basket with the ashes. On coming home, the old man took his wife into the garden. It being winter, their favourite cherry tree was bare. He sprinkled a pinch of ashes on it, and, lo! it sprouted blossoms until it became a cloud of pink blooms which perfumed the air. The news of this filled the village, and everyone ran out to see the wonder.

  1. What did the old man ask?
    The old man humbly asked for the ashes.
  2. How did the covetous couple behave with the old man?
    The covetous couple turned up their noses at him and scolded him as if he were a thief.

18. Write a story (any one):

(A) A Thirsty Crow

Once on a hot summer day, a crow was very thirsty. He flew here and there in search of water but could not find any. At last, he saw a pot with a little water at the bottom. The water was too low for him to reach. The clever crow thought of an idea. He picked up small pebbles and dropped them into the pot one by one. The water level rose. The crow drank the water and flew away happily.

Moral: Where there is a will, there is a way.

(B) An Honest Woodcutter

Once a poor woodcutter was cutting wood near a river. His axe slipped from his hand and fell into the river. He began to cry. The river goddess appeared and asked him why he was crying. She brought a golden axe, but the woodcutter said it was not his. She then brought a silver axe, but he refused again. Finally, she brought his iron axe. The woodcutter happily accepted it. The goddess was pleased with his honesty and gave him all three axes as a reward.

Moral: Honesty is the best policy.

19. Write a paragraph (any one):

(A) A Village Fair

A village fair is a very exciting event. It is usually held on the occasion of a festival. People from nearby villages come to enjoy it. There are many shops selling toys, sweets, and clothes. Children enjoy rides on merry-go-rounds and swings. Magicians, jugglers, and dancers entertain the crowd. The fair is full of noise, colour, and happiness. Everyone returns home with a smile.

(B) Morning Walk

A morning walk is a good habit. It keeps us healthy and active. Early in the morning, the air is fresh and clean. Walking in the park, we see green trees, colourful flowers, and hear birds singing. It makes us feel fresh for the whole day. Many people go for a morning walk to stay fit. I also enjoy my morning walk every day.
